Jack McClelland – a quote

From The Perilous Trade: Book Publishing in Canada 1946-2006 by Roy MacSkimming (McClelland & Stewart, 2007):

In a 1971 Saturday Night feature by Silver Donald Cameron, (Jack) McClelland ruminated on his publishing philosophy. Of course there was a way to make M&S profitable, he said: “All you have to do is fire all the editorial and design people, who cost about $200,000 a year, keep one copy editor, publish ten or fifteen books already in the schedule, and milk that $2 million worth of backlist sales for all it’s worth.” But, McClelland explained, such an approach didn’t interest him.
